Okay well… maybe not this weekend, but definitely the next one. Actually wait, you have your second cousin’s neighbour’s dog’s wedding next weekend and you have RSVP’d already. But the weekend after, for sure!

Let’s cut the bull. If you want to add a touch of luxury to your home, you need advice that you can implement straight away.

We’ve put together five easy ideas that are guaranteed to elevate the look of your interior without having to spend a small fortune on renovations.

1. Create Layers

Nothing feels more luxe than a layered look. So, what exactly are these “layers”? Simply put, layering is adding different components to the space while adhering to the same style & colour palette, but differentiating the textures. It plays an important role in shaping our depth perception and eliminating that one-dimensional look. You can view every item in your room as a layer, from the rug all the way to the wallpaper. The challenge lies in striking the balance between ‘just the right amount of layers’ vs ‘a look that’s too cluttered’.

After styling hundreds and hundreds of properties, we are confident we’ve cracked the code.

Foxy Stylist Tips for Creating Layers in the Bedroom:

  • Use more cushions! As soon as you extend the size and length of your pillows and cushions, the room will instantly feel more luxurious. We LOVE styling with duck-feather filled cushions (we call them “choppies”), because they give the bed a cozy, ready-to-jump-in
  • Tone down the patterns, go crazy on textures! Excessive pattern feels tacky and cheap, so we recommend staying away from it. Instead, be adventurous with the textures and make each layer a different material. Doing this provides just the right amount of visual interest and stimulates our senses.
  • Don’t forget to add rugs and bedheads! You know you have your life together when you have a bedhead (provided it looks right in the space and doesn’t cover any windows). Placing a rug 1/3 under the bed is a nice way to zone the area.
  • Recommended Layers: rug, valance, sheet, doona, 2 euros, 2 standards, 2 decorative cushions, 2 choppies, 1 oblong cushion at the front, coverlet, throw, bedhead

2. Decorate with Sophisticated Materials

There are certain materials that just scream LUXURY. In the past, their uniqueness and rarity meant that only the richest of the rich could afford them. These days it’s much easier to get your hands on materials like leather, marble, gold, velvet or silk without having to lose an arm and a leg in the process. They are timeless, elegant, and sophisticated.

3. Display Statement Artwork

Artwork has the power to influence the mood and create a personality for the entire house. If you want to make a statement, do not settle for a few itty-bitty framed pictures here and there. They tend to make the room look optically smaller, which is the opposite of the desired effect.

Opt-in for a large canvas, framed print or even a mirror to create that luxe, dramatic look full of character.  A single large-scale painting or a matching pair of artwork elevates the entire space and adds a pop of luxury to your home.

4. Ditch the Packaging from Commercial Products

When we stage homes for sale, we always ensure to hide any visible household products. Items like shampoos, dishwashing liquid, laundry powder and similar are simply not a good look in a beautifully styled space.

In our households, hiding these products from sight would not be a sustainable solution and quite frankly, I can see it becoming annoying very quickly. Instead, we recommend ditching the packaging and re-bottling & re-jarring everything you can. If you are looking to do this on a budget, there are plenty of resources online, including Facebook groups and entire YouTube channels dedicated to this topic.

5. Add Extra Sources of Light

The idea of what a luxurious interior should look like differs for each & every one of us, but we can all agree on one thing – ample light & abundance of space are an absolute MUST. If your home doesn’t have much natural light coming through, don’t throw in the towel just yet! You may be surprised how much of a difference it makes if you add one or two extra sources of light.

Whether it’s new pendant lights, floor lamps or table lamps, brightening up the rooms will not only make them look lighter and more spacious, but you can also use the lights to zone and highlight certain areas (a cupboard, a reading nook, a kitchen counter, etc.).

TIP: Always use the same temperature light bulbs to keep a cohesive flow across your room. For staging, our preference is cool white.
