When you hang art in your family home, it’s been chosen for personal reasons. It may remind you of a family holiday. It might reflect your love for the ocean or the mountains. It might be a collage of your children and family. My advice to clients though, is that these pieces should be removed when selling the home. Why? Well, staging the home is about de-personalising the space and staging art is no different. It’s designed to market your home, to fill empty walls and create excitement in a buyer. Staging art will help your buyers make the emotional connection with your home. Let me show you what to think about and where to go to get your artwork when staging your home.
When choosing your staging art, it’s important that it complements the style and setting of your home. For the greatest visual impact, repeat colours that already feature in your room. If you’re unsure, abstract florals and abstract landscapes work well in any home. I love using framed artwork and canvas prints, but never together on the same wall.
The size and shape of the art is paramount to ensuring great presentation. Select the art to fit the wall or, cluster several pieces to fill a very large wall. Make sure there is some empty space on the wall, otherwise it will look too cramped. Hang your pictures where they will be most visible when you first enter the room. This would normally be the “background” for the dining room table, for your living room furniture or for the bed in your bedroom. When mounting it on the wall, position the art within 10 – 15 centimetres of a side table, buffet or bed. It’s best to think of the art and the furniture that its closest to as one unit. In other words, hang the selected art piece so that it feels visually “attached” to the furniture to which they’re closest.
